We do not sit in the middle of the room.

The center table is a performance. Everyone can see you. You can see everyone. It is efficient for service and fatal for lingering. A house that offers it first has already told you what it values.

Ask for the corner. A booth with your back covered. A seat that faces the fire instead of the door. Somewhere the conversation can drop without becoming a show for the room.

If they look puzzled, leave. A lodge that understands lingering will already know which seat you mean.
