A key on a leather fob

First season · October 2026

We judge a house by its key.

Not a card that blinks. A brass key, heavier than it needs to be, on a leather fob worn dark by winters of other hands. It comes across the desk with your name already spoken, never asked.

The desk is really a table. There is a ledger on it, kept in ink, and a lamp lit at four in the afternoon, and just beyond it the lounge with the fire already going — which is how you know a house has its order right, because the room you came for is the first thing you see, the lift map lives somewhere in a drawer, and nobody hurries you up the stairs before you have had a drink.

Keep the key in your coat pocket all evening. It is the only thing you need to carry.

Some houses ask for it back at checkout. The good ones notice when you hesitate.
